28A - Your Exit Strategy

1. Initially, when I started this project in the beginning of the class, my only idea was to create a new library for the University of Florida. As the class has continued, I started to come up with more and more ideas about what I could do to evolve this idea into an actual company. For this reason, I can see myself continuing in this business for several years, many even decades, and then retiring and selling the company. 2. I've selected this particular strategy since I think there is more room to grow, as I can develop my idea from simply creating a new building to making several new buildings for campuses around the world. I could also start to do several other tasks that may enhance Universities in many other ways. With that being said, I feel as though there is a market that has plenty of room to be explored and I can potentially go pretty far with it. 3. I don't feel as though my exit strategy has impacted my decisions, but that instead my decisions have influenced by...

27A - Reading Reflection No. 3

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?  The book I chose for this assignment is "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success" by Carol Dweck. The general argument of this book is that the mindset you have plays an extremely important role in your success. Dweck explains the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, and whichever one you choose impacts how you deal with situations and improve.  2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003? I feel as though the book connected with the material we have learned in class since you should be opening your mind to criticism, critique, and feedback throughout the entire length of the course. The book says those with a fixed mindset believe they are naturally good at everything and simply correct, while those with a growth mindset believe that they can achieve anything if they work hard enough and work. In entrepreneurship, if you simply pitch an idea...

26A - Celebrating Failure

1. This semester, I failed pretty hard in the same area that has scarred many before me: Business Finance. Going into it, I thought that I would be able to go against the odds and ace the class, however I was humbled pretty easily by the first exam. After many long nights in the library and plenty of blood, sweat, and tears, I ended up doing pretty poorly on the first exam. The second exam was said to be the easiest, and I managed to score an 80%. However now I am on my way towards the final and most difficult exam. 2. I've learned quite a bit from my failures this semester. To begin with, there are some things in life that you work for that you are simply not going to get so easily, no matter how familiar you are with getting what you want on the usual. In this case, I have never struggled significantly with a class and doing so for the first time made me realize that. Despite how disappointing that sounds, it is actually an useful lesson to learn, because it gives you a reason t...

25A – What’s Next?

Existing Market 1.      What’s next? More construction and enhancement of new campuses. 2.      I interviewed 3 University students that I met on campus earlier this week, and I explained to each of them the nature of my venture. Two of them gave me the idea that I should remain paired with the University and try to expand and conduct more projects here. The other person advised that I should research more about trying to incorporate more sustainability related construction. 3.      While remaining partnered with UF would be nice and possibly productive, in the long run I would love to partner with even more Universities and give myself a chance to grow. So in this way, I am accepting the advice of those I interviewed but taking it a step further. As far as sustainability goes, I think that would be a great idea that would possibly set me apart from any competition I may have in the future. New Market 1.  ...

24A - Venture Concept No. 1

In a University as diverse and large as University of Florida, there are bound to be opportunities for growth and entrepreneurship. These opportunities start with a need, and upon observing life at the University it is clear that there is a need for more space to study on campus. This need is felt throughout almost all of the University students.             The nature of the need is that it is one that is extremely pressing at certain times, and simply desired at other times. For example, on an average day at the university, the libraries tend to be pretty full, however you can still manage to find some space if you spend some time looking. The need becomes exacerbated during high-demand periods such as exam week and it becomes impossible, or nearly impossible, to find open space on campus.             This opportunity is huge for individuals who plan to expand the campus...

23A – Your Venture’s Unfair Advantage

Resources in My Venture ·        Human Capital o    V- It’s definitely valuable to have a team of individuals with a diverse skillset o    R- Human capital is not particularly rare o    I- Relatively imitable o    N- When it comes to working with people, human capital is non-substitutable, however in regards to building, it can be replaced by advanced technology ·        Partnerships (Close Ties) with the University o    V- This is a very valuable resource o    R- This resource is also rare, since it cannot be found just anywhere o    I- Non imitable o    N- Non substitutable ·        Financial Capital (University’s Budget) o    V- Upon convincing the university to accept the plan, there would be plenty of funds to build the building which is very valuable o    R- Not rare...

22A – Elevator Pitch No. 3

1.   https://youtu.be/xmiP3WxVl_A 2. I did not receive any feedback about things to change about my most recent pitch, so instead I critiqued myself and noticed I could do a better job of speaking more fluently and being more compelling. 3. In this pitch, I rehearsed several times before recording and I was sure to sound enthusiastic about my idea and mention more details, such as the fact that a new library would be great to add for prospective students that are touring.

21A- Reading Reflection No. 2

The book I chose from the reading list for this assignment was How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, by Scott Adams. I really enjoyed reading this book since it was so lighthearted and inspiring at the same time. 1.      1.  Overall, the theme of the book was that despite failures, you can learn to enhance your skills and lifestyle to turn your losses into major success in the future. Throughout the book Adams discusses his many life failures, and he couples these with insightful advice that he has learned along the way. For example, some of my favorite advice was to find your personal energy in terms of space and time in order to stay motivated and efficient. I liked the way that Adams capitalized on the fact that your needs are unique and specific to you, so it’s essential to find your own fire in order to produce the best work. 2.    2.    In my opinion, this book connected with and enhanced what we are learning in ENT30...

20A - Growing Your Social Capital

1)     One person must be a domain expert in your industry.   The first person I spoke with was a construction expert that got in contact with through my dad. I mostly asked him questions about how feasible it would be to build an entirely new building within the University of Florida. The advice he have me was to look into the University’s budget and reach out to some decision makers within the University and use this information to get a more clear idea. 2)     One person must be an expert on your market.   The second person I spoke with was a marketing expert from Clearwater Florida that I reached through linkedin. She gave me some ideas about how to appeal to more University students in backing up my idea and turning it into a reality. We discussed my target market and she also said I should be paying attention to the demographics and psychographics of the University’s decision making board, since I have to appeal to them dire...

19A - Idea Napkin No. 2

1)  You.  My name is Nikki Shuman and I am a 3 rd year business student at the University of Florida. I am involved in different business clubs on campus and I enjoy many hobbies such as piano, singing, painting and volleyball. Above all, I love to work with people and my goal as a business student is to incorporate that love into whatever work I do. 2)  What are you offering to customers?  I am not only offering a product to my customers, but an experience. The construction of a new library would improve the University by adding a completely new building with plenty of space as well as a renovated area to attract future students.   3)  Who are you offering it to?   I am offering a new library to University of Florida students. This consists of young adults ranging from ages 18-22, from all different backgrounds, races, genders, etc.   4)  Why do they care? People care about the construction of a new library because it would b...
