Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

Segment: The segment I will be using is University students who actively use the two popular libraries on campus: Library West and Marston. These students are young adults that require a quiet, focus-friendly environment to complete their work and study for exams. Interviews: For the interviews I conducted, I chose three individuals that fit the segment perfectly. The first individual was a classmate of mine, the second was a friend, and the third was a random individual that I stopped on campus. All three of them are University students in their third year, and all three of them had difficult majors that required a lot of time to be spent on studying and being productive. They preferred to finish this work on campus in the library, due to their increased ability to focus as well as the library location’s convenience. Finally, they all shared the unmet need of frequently not being able to find enough space in the library.         ...

Idea Napkin No. 1

1) You. Who you are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. Also: what are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life? My name is Nikki Shuman and I am a third year Business Administration major at the University of Florida. Currently, I work as a marketing intern for Smokin’ Notes and a Community Assistant for 2 nd Avenue Centre- a property of American Campus Communities. I believe my experiences in different clubs and events have given me skills working with people and leading groups. My aspirations are to obtain a corporate management position for an interesting and creative company. I believe a business project like this would give me experience leading a project, building something from the ground up (literally), and solving problems as obstacles deter me. 2) What are you offering to customers? Describe the product or service (in o...

Testing the Hypothesis Part 2

Who:  There are some people that fall outside of the boundary of those in my opportunity, and those people consist of individuals who do not depend on the two main libraries (Library West and Marston) to study. This creates a list of people ranging from individuals that study at home, to people who have found other locations, to professors or other people who happen to be on campus. What:  The need for space to study differs from other needs on campus greatly due to the urgency of the need as well as the personal preference for the need, which varies from person to person. For example, the need for space in the library is a completely different need from the need for parking space due to a persons taste/personal desire. Why:  The outsiders needs are different from individuals within the boundary because the outsider does not need the need as specifically as the insider does. The people whom I interviewed were specifically interested in there being more study ...

Solving The Problem

With an issue such as the lack of space in the libraries at the University of Florida, I feel as though the only ways to really go about solving this problem is by their expanding our current library, or by constructing an entirely new one.               Personally, I feel as though building a new library would be the best option for University Students. This is because the construction of a new building would not get in the way of the students ability to use the current study locations, and I feel like adding onto the current buildings would. If we begin adding to the current library, it is likely that there would be times when the library would be inaccessible due to the work going on. Additionally, I feel as though there is only so much you can improve when trying to add onto a building, and there is more room for possibilities when you are creating an entirely new building.       ...

Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

1) My opportunity is the apparent lack of space in the University of Florida Libraries. 2) Space in the library is very difficult to come by for University students, and they are unable to find any space to study and work because more people are coming to UF and there have been no recent expansions.   ·        The who: University Students ·        The what: Unable to find any space in the libraries or locate any sort of quiet and reliable place to study and do their assignments. ·        The why: There has been no expansions on the UF libraries in a long time and the population of the university is increasing. 3) ·        Testing the who: There are plenty of individuals that share this need, and this is apparent due to the many complaints that are heard on a regular basis regarding space at the library. University students are by far the biggest mark...

Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Economic Opportunities Saudi Oil Attack Is Unlikely to Dent U.S. Economy Where opportunity was found: https://www.wsj.com/articles/saudi-oil-attack-is-unlikely-to-dent-u-s-economy-11568539800 What leads you to believe that this information suggests an opportunity might exist: An opportunity exists based on this information because oil is a product that is high in demand in the united states and the rising of its prices is likely to make many consumers very upset. Therefore, there is a new unmet need for lower priced oil. Who do you think is most likely to be the customer with the opportunity: Individuals who are dependent upon their cars and need gas are likely customer’s. Especially if they use their cars and need to fill their tank frequently. Is the opportunity relatively easy or difficult to exploit? Why?: This opportunity is relatively easy to exploit as the transportation industry has a lot of room for improvement and has already been growing. Alternatives to oil ...

Forming an Opportunity Belief

I personally have a belief that an opportunity exists for UF to expand their libraries. Currently, there is an unmet need by University students due to the lack of space in the libraries, since the ones that we have on campus fill extremely quickly and it is near impossible to get a seat. This is especially problematic during busy weeks such as finals week or weeks that we have other exams. This is a need that is shared by almost all University students, which is expressed through frequent complaints and memes being posted on the Swampy Memes Facebook page.               This need is one that has existed for a while, but has only increased due to the steadily increasing population of the University of Florida. Currently, students are trying to meet this need by searching for other study locations, such as empty classrooms, or Newell. This attempt does not solve the problem, however, because these locations also fill up...

Identifying Local Opportunities

Local Newspaper: https://www.gainesville.com/ 1.      County repeals plastic bag and Styrofoam ban https://www.gainesville.com/news/20190910/county-repeals-plastic-bag-and-styrofoam-ban On Tuesday, the Alachua County Commission repealed its plastic bag and Styrofoam container ban with a vote of 4-0. The reasoning behind this decision is due to threats made by the Florida Retailers Federation to take legal action. The Alachua County Commission               The problem with this story is the environmental impact that comes with allowing the use of plastic bags. According to the EPA, Americans throw away an estimated 25,000,000,000 Styrofoam cup and uses 320-500 single use plastic bags every year. An established law preventing the use of these materials could significantly reduce the amount of pollution we see from day to day. This problem can be felt by not only people, but animals and o...

Your Entrepreneurship Story

Image
Throughout the course of my life, I’ve loved the idea of entrepreneurship. I remember pursuing my first entrepreneurial project in 3 rd grade when I decided to start up a class newspaper. I delegated different sections of our paper to different classmates of mine- the Ask Allie Advice column, the Sports Segment, a ‘joke of the day’ bit- and they would submit their work to me. I would then go home and put the entire thing together with the help of my mother (who was president of typing up our paper since my 9 year old fingers were incredibly slow). The next day we would redistribute them to the class, and after a few weeks we had a thriving business. Suddenly I was the owner and editor-in-chief of Ms. Bankston’s 3 rd Grade Weekly News. Fast forward to my life as a University student, over a decade later, I haven’t lost my entrepreneurial touch. Last year I stumbled across painting, which started as a hobby and eventually evolved into a small side hustle. After I made a few simple p...
