Your Entrepreneurship Story

Throughout the course of my life, I’ve loved the idea of entrepreneurship. I remember pursuing my first entrepreneurial project in 3rd grade when I decided to start up a class newspaper. I delegated different sections of our paper to different classmates of mine- the Ask Allie Advice column, the Sports Segment, a ‘joke of the day’ bit- and they would submit their work to me. I would then go home and put the entire thing together with the help of my mother (who was president of typing up our paper since my 9 year old fingers were incredibly slow). The next day we would redistribute them to the class, and after a few weeks we had a thriving business. Suddenly I was the owner and editor-in-chief of Ms. Bankston’s 3rd Grade Weekly News.
Fast forward to my life as a University student, over a decade later, I haven’t lost my entrepreneurial touch. Last year I stumbled across painting, which started as a hobby and eventually evolved into a small side hustle. After I made a few simple paintings for friends and posted them on social media, I received a small influx of requests for similar custom paintings. I sold some to my close friends and family until other people began to reach out. To this day I still set up exchanges with my friends to paint their beer pong (or water pong) tables and decorate their walls.
The concept of entrepreneurship is one that I have always found to be exciting. While the small businesses I have started over the years as a student aren’t exactly the basis of an amazing career, they do exemplify how entrepreneurship is something I am really interested in. My biggest reason for joining this class is to try to discover what it is that will make me feel passionate enough to start a real business one day. I’m hoping that techniques like making ‘Bug Lists’ will inspire me enough to create something incredible. I’ve always believed that entrepreneurship is the foundation of our growth as a society, and I believe that we can use it to change the world, one 3rd grade newspaper at a time.

  1. Hi Nicole,
I relate to your introduction to entrepreneurship at a young age in school, because I had a similar experience in middle school where I had to contribute to running a business that we made ourselves. It's so cool that you continued your entrepreneurial spirit into college and found a way to turn your talent into a way to make money! I also hope that this class will potentially help me change the world, entrepreneurship is very exciting to me! Nice post overall, I have no critiques.

  2. It is very interesting to me that you started your first entrepreneurship project in 3rd grade. Its great that you were able to turn a nice hobby, painting into a small business of yours. Having the ability to not only come up with the business but also to have the talent to do the work your self is fascinating. I too hope to get some sort of inspiration to come up with something incredible one day.

  3. Hi Nikki,
I’m impressed that you started your own newspaper in only the third grade. When I was in third grade, all I cared about was trading Silly Bands and playing basketball with my friends. It’s really cool how you turned your art passion into an actual business. I feel like the most successful businesses were started by entrepreneurs who followed their passion and used that energy towards something bigger. Very nice post!
